Remember all those crazy pictures of Putin hunting and whatnot? Well here’s a new feat the Russian president pulled off. Yesterday he helped a flock of Siberian white cranes in their migration to Asia by piloting a motorized hang-glider in the Siberian skies, guiding the flock.

He thus played the role of a surrogate parent or a chief crane of the group, leading the flock in the first stretch of the 5000 km migration to their winter habitat in Asia, and they responded positively and followed Putin, who wore a white suit.

The cranes needed guidance to detect their natural migration route because they were raised in captivity. Under the project “Flight of Hope” to save the Siberian cranes, the birds are being trained by experienced pilots to migrate towards the warmer parts of Asia in the first part of September.
