Tank buried in the beach of Soyo, remnant of the Angolan Civil War (4 pictures)

Tank buried in sand in Angola. This Russian-made tank was probably part of a landing in an effort to push rebel forces out of the oil-rich regions of northern Angola.

This tank and possibly its crew never made it out. An estimated 500,000 people died in total during the Angolan civil war.

During the civil war, this beach provided a landing point for troops as the conflict swung to and fro between government and rebels forces.

The Soyo region in the north of Zaire Province near the Congo is extremely oil and natural gas rich. For this reason, the area was a conflict hotspot during the Angolan civil war.
